Transcript

My favourite room is my bedroom. I love it because it is the only room in my house where I can have a lot of privacy. There is a desk in the middle of the room and a table on the left side of it. I do most of my homework in my bedroom, so I spend a lot of time sitting at my desk. I usually keep my phone in the desk drawer when I am studying. My room is not very bright so there is a light above the desk. There is a desk fan on the right of the desk and the bookshelves are behind the fan. Because I enjoy reading, I have a lot of books on the bookshelves. There is a poster on the wall on the left side of the room next to the bookshelf. Every time I feel stressed, I look at the poster to remind myself to take a break, and I feel calm again. Under the desk on the right, there is a trashcan. I try to keep my room neat. There is not enough room on my desk, so I keep my backpack on the floor under the table.

You just heard Andy describe his bedroom. Before we dive into the grammar, let's make sure we know the vocabulary for furniture and objects in a room.

Furniture Hangman Game 🪑

Let's play Hangman to learn furniture vocabulary!

Your teacher will show you a piece of furniture and you need to guess the letters. Every wrong guess adds a part to the hangman. Can you guess the word before the drawing is complete?

Now that you know the vocabulary, let's look at how Andy used it. How did he describe where things are? What grammar structures did he use? Let's find out!

Grammar Focus – There is / There are + Prepositions of Place

Let’s explore grammar through a real story — because grammar only makes sense in use. In the audio, the speaker describes their favorite room, using two key structures:

1. There is / There are

These phrases are used to indicate that something exists or is present in a certain place.
  • There is – used for singular nouns or uncountable things
    • There is a desk in the middle of the room.
There is a light above the desk.
  • There are – used for plural countable nouns
    • There are books on the shelves.
There are many things I love about this room.

2. Prepositions of Place

Prepositions are words or phrases that show  things like time, place, and direction. We use these prepositions to describe the  location of places in a city or on a map. These prepositions are often  used when giving directions. In the audio, we hear:

notion image
  • In →Dentro
  • On→Em cima/sobre
  • Under→em baixo
  • Behind→Atrás
  • Above→Acima
  • Below→Abaixo

notion image
  • In front of→Em frente
  • Next to/ near→Perto
  • Far from→Longe
  • On the right→A direita
  • On the left→A esquerda
  • Between→Entre

Now it's time to put this grammar into practice! Complete the exercise below to check your understanding.

week 2 — PROJECT
🎯goal: design and describe your favorite room using "there is / there are" and prepositions of place.

You've learned the vocabulary, grammar, and practiced describing rooms. Now let's take it to the next level with a creative project!

🎨 In-Class Challenge: Build the Room

After all presentations, let's practice describing and building rooms!

Now it's time for a fun pair activity. You'll work with a partner: one person describes a room, and the other builds it in Canva!

👥
You'll need:
  • Work in pairs (Student A + Student B)
  • Canva template open (same one from the project)
  • A room photo (teacher will send to Student A only)

🎯 How to play:

🔴 STUDENT A (the Describer):
  • Receives a room photo from the teacher via private message
  • Does NOT show the photo to Student B
  • Describes the room out loud using "there is / there are" and prepositions
  • Answers Student B's questions
🔵 STUDENT B (the Builder):
  • Opens a blank Canva with the room template
  • Listens to Student A's description
  • Builds the room in Canva based on the description
  • Can ask questions: "Where is the lamp?" / "Is the sofa big or small?"

💬 Example description (Student A):

"This is a living room. There is a big gray sofa in the middle of the room. In front of the sofa, there is a small coffee table. On the left side, there is a tall lamp next to the window. There are two plants on the floor near the window..."

⏱️ Activity Flow:

Round 1 (10-15 minutes):
  • Student A describes → Student B builds in Canva
Round 2 (Comparison - 5 minutes):
  • Student A shows the original photo
  • Compare: How similar are they?
  • Whole class can see both and discuss!
Round 3 (Optional - switch roles):
  • Student B receives a new photo
  • Now Student B describes → Student A builds

✅ Useful phrases for Student B:

When you need help, ask:
  • "Where is the ____?"
  • "Is the ____ big or small?"
  • "What color is the ____?"
  • "Is there a ____ in the room?"
  • "Are there any ____ near the ____?"

🏆
Tips for success:
  • Student A: Speak slowly and clearly. Use "there is/are" and prepositions!
  • Student B: Listen carefully and ask questions if you don't understand.
  • Both: Have fun! It's okay if they're not perfect — the goal is to practice describing!

Fantastic presentations! You can now describe rooms like a pro. But let's think bigger — what about describing your whole neighborhood? What places are near your house? Let's expand our world!

week 3
🎯goal:learn how to give directions and describe what people can and can't do in different places around the neighborhood using maps, prepositions and real-world vocabulary.

Welcome to Andy’s Neighborhood

You already know about his favorite room, but what about the neighborhood where he lives? In this activity, we’re going to explore Andy’s neighborhood — read a short text, look at the map, and organize the information.

🏘️ First, look at Andy's map again. Which places do you have in your neighborhood?

Use "there is" or "there are" to talk about your neighborhood.

notion image
💡 Examples:
In my neighborhood, there is a supermarket and a bakery.
There are two parks near my house.
There is a drugstore, but there isn't a swimming pool.
There isn't a movie theater in my neighborhood.

Andy's house is on Main Street.Across from his house, there is a drugstore. Near his house, there is a supermarket. Andy can buy food there. Next to Andy's house, there is a swimming pool. Andy can swim there. On Second Avenue, there is a gas station, a post office, a Mexican restaurant, and a fire station.
On Franklin Street, there is a bakery, a library, and a bank. Andy can read books in the library. Andy can buy bread in the bakery. There is a movie theater in the neighborhood. Andy can watch movies there. There is a park near the roundabout. There is also a newsstand and a coffee shop. Andy can also go to the mall or to the gym. The gym is near the police station.
What can Andy do in his neighborhood?
✅ He can shop
✅ He can exercise
✅ He can eat out
✅ He can watch movies

What can't Andy do?
❌ He can't go to the beach
❌ He can't go hiking

Let’s organize what we read!

Now it’s your turn! Look at the map and complete the chart below. Use:
  • Prepositions of place (next to, across from, near...)
  • "can" or "can’t" in your answers
💡 Example:
The library is next to the bakery. Andy can read there. The gas station is across from the drugstore. He can get gas.

🧭 Where is it? (use a preposition)
✅ What can Andy do there? (use "can")

You did a great job identifying the places and what Andy can do there! But knowing where places are is only half the story. What if someone asks you how to get there? Let's learn how to give directions!

Let’s take a tour — and follow the rules!

Now it’s time to give directions using the map. But there’s a twist: You won’t just say how to get there — you’ll also say what people can and can’t do in that place. You’re going to practice both:
Directions
Can / Can’t

🧩 Useful Phrases – Prepositions of Direction

Now it’s your turn!

Look at the map and complete each question with:
  • 🧭 Directions (walk, turn, go past, etc.)
  • ✅ What people can do in the place
  • ❌ What people can’t do in the place

Example

How can I get to the swimming pool?
✅ Walk along Main Street and turn left onto Second Avenue. The swimming pool is next to Andy’s house.
In the swimming pool, you can swim and relax, but you can’t bring loud music or food.
